If you are getting ready to interview for a new job, you know that making a first impression is very important. The good news is that you have got far enough to warrant an in person interview. Before you arrive for you interview, there are a variety of things that you should consider. Whether or not you have been through many interviews, or just a few, these ideas are always great to brush up on so you can head into your interview prepared and confident.

The first that you will want to do before you even head into the building is research the company and position that you are applying for. A huge mistake that applicants make is not researching the position that they are applying for. As you research your position, and the larger company in general, you will start to get a feel for what you are going to be stepping into. This will also lead you to questions that you can ask during the interview for further clarification.

Asking questions to your interviewer is a great way for you to stand out from the competition. They do not need to be the most profound or technical questions, although if you have those ask as well, but something is better than nothing. One thing you will want to avoid when developing and asking questions is discussion on pay and benefits. These are perfectly fine questions to have in mind, but asking them on the first in person interview could be off putting. If the interview offers an opportunity to discuss it, by all means go  for it, if not though, wait until you get an offer to discuss the financials of the position.

You will also want to make sure that you are dressing to impress for your first interview. Think of it like this, would you want to hire someone who does not care about making a positive first impression. You do not have to rent a tux by any means, but you will want to pay attention to your appearance. Wearing a suit is never a bad option. A nice pair of shoes from somewhere like The Walking Company is highly advised as well. While it may not seem like a big deal at the time, making the effort to present yourself in a positive manner can make all of the difference. Put on your best suit and a good pair of shoes and you will be ready to tackle your interview.

Finally, you will want to make sure that you are at your appointment on time. If you are the type of person that likes to cut it close, be sure that you give yourself plenty of extra time to get to your appointment. If you rely on public transit, be aware that unexpected delays can strike at anytime, so heading down early may be advised. Similarly, if you are driving, be sure to take traffic into account and determine what the parking situation is like at the office. If you arrive too early, you can always find a coffee shop to prepare yourself in.

Preparing yourself for an in person interview can be stressful, but taking the time to prepare yourself will pay dividends, even if you do not get the job this time.
